We Trained 30 Bahawalpur Business Owners in SEO – Here’s What Happened

When we first opened enrollment for a business-owner-focused SEO training cohort in Bahawalpur, we did not know what to expect. Most of the women who signed up had never heard of a title tag. Several thought SEO was something only large companies in Karachi or Lahore could afford. What happened over the following weeks changed how we think about who SEO training is actually for.

She Earn has always trained students who want to start careers in digital marketing. But this cohort was different. These were women already running businesses in Bahawalpur, dealing with the real pressure of finding customers, managing stock, and growing revenue in a market that is increasingly moving online. They did not join to become SEO professionals. They joined because their businesses needed to be found on Google and they were tired of paying people they did not understand to do something they could not measure.

This is an honest account of what they came in with, what shifted during training, and what changed for their businesses afterward.

Who These 30 Women Were

The group was deliberately mixed. We did not want only boutique owners or only service businesses. We wanted to see how SEO training landed across different types of businesses that actually exist in Bahawalpur.

The cohort included women running clothing boutiques and fabric shops in and around Circular Road and Model Town, home-based bakers and food businesses selling through WhatsApp and Instagram, private tuition centres and skill-based academies, beauty salons and skin care service providers, and women selling handmade products including embroidery, jewellery, and home decor through social commerce.

Most had been in business for two to five years. Almost all had an Instagram page. Very few had a website. None had ever set up Google Business Profile. And not a single one had looked at Google Search Console before training started.

What They Thought SEO Was Before Training Began

We asked every participant to write one sentence describing what SEO meant to them before their first session. The answers were revealing.

The most common response was some version of: “It is a technical thing that makes your website appear on Google, handled by experts.” Several women mentioned that they had paid someone for SEO services and received a report they could not read. A few thought SEO was the same as running Google Ads. One participant said she thought it only applied to English-language content and was therefore not relevant to her Urdu-speaking customer base.

These were not uninformed women. They were running real businesses. The gap was not intelligence or ambition. It was access to a clear explanation of how search actually works, explained in a way that connected directly to their own customers and their own city.

What the Training Covered for Business Owners

We adapted the core SEO course in Bahawalpur curriculum to focus on the modules most immediately relevant to business owners rather than running the full 12-module sequence from the beginning.

The sessions concentrated on four areas. First, how Google decides what to show when someone searches, and what that means for a local Bahawalpur business specifically. Second, keyword research focused on what their actual customers type into Google when they are looking for a product or service like theirs. Third, Google Business Profile setup and optimization, because for most of these businesses, a well-optimized GBP listing would deliver results faster than any other SEO action. Fourth, on-page SEO basics for the business owners who had websites, covering title tags, meta descriptions, and page content that matches what customers search for.

We also spent time on something most SEO courses skip entirely: how to read the data. Understanding what Google Search Console is showing you, what a ranking position means in practice, and how to know whether what you are doing is working.

Stories From the Cohort

Numbers are useful, but they do not fully capture what shifts when a business owner understands how search works for the first time. A few stories from the cohort illustrate the practical change more clearly. Names have been changed to protect privacy.

Boutique Owner, Model Town Bahawalpur

From zero online presence to appearing in local search

She had been running a women’s clothing boutique for four years. Her business came entirely through word of mouth and Instagram. She had never searched for her own shop on Google because she assumed it would not appear. During the Google Business Profile session, she set up her listing for the first time, added photos, wrote a description using the keyword phrases her customers actually use, and requested reviews from five existing regulars.

Within five weeks of completing that one action, her shop was appearing in Google Maps results for “women’s boutique Bahawalpur.” She told us that three new customers in a single month had mentioned finding her on Google, which had never happened before in four years of operation.

Home Baker, DHA Bahawalpur

Discovering that her customers were searching for exactly what she makes

She ran a home-based baking business selling custom cakes and mithai through WhatsApp orders. When we walked through keyword research in the session, she searched for the first time to see what people in Bahawalpur actually type into Google when they want cakes for a wedding or a birthday.

She found search volume for terms she had never thought to use in her Instagram captions or WhatsApp status. The realization that customers were actively searching for her product, and that she was invisible to them, was the turning point. She created a simple website page and optimized it around those keyword phrases. She also updated her GBP description to include the specific product names her customers searched for. Two months later she told us that her WhatsApp inquiry volume had increased noticeably and that several customers mentioned finding her through Google.

Tuition Centre Owner, Satellite Town Bahawalpur

Ranking for a term she did not know existed

She ran a small private tuition centre with a handful of students she had collected through personal connections over three years. During the local SEO session, she searched “tuition centre Bahawalpur” on her phone for the first time. She was genuinely surprised to see that people were searching for this phrase at all. She had assumed parents in Bahawalpur relied entirely on personal recommendations to find tuition centres.

After setting up her GBP listing, getting a simple one-page site built by a relative, and asking three current parents to leave Google reviews, she began appearing in local results within six weeks. She enrolled two new students in the month following, both of whom found her through Google Maps.

Embroidery Seller, Bahawalpur City

Understanding why Instagram alone was limiting her reach

She had built a genuine following on Instagram selling hand-embroidered dupattas and cushion covers. Her concern coming into the training was that sales had plateaued despite her follower count growing. The session on search intent opened something up for her. She realized that Instagram shows her work to people who already follow her or who stumble on a reel, but Google captures the person who is actively looking to buy right now.

She did not have a website, so the immediate actions for her were different: setting up a GBP listing linked to her Instagram, and for the first time adding alt text to her product images on Instagram to improve discoverability within the platform’s own search. She is now in the process of building a basic website so she can capture that active-search traffic directly.

The Pattern We Noticed Across the Cohort

After working through 30 individual business situations, a consistent pattern became clear. The businesses that made the most progress in the shortest time were not the ones with websites or any prior digital marketing experience. They were the ones who completed three specific actions during training: claimed and fully filled out their Google Business Profile, collected at least three Google reviews from existing customers, and updated the name and description of their business to include the phrases their customers actually search for.

That sequence, which costs nothing except time, produced visible search results for more than half the cohort within 60 days. It also gave every participant a baseline understanding of how Google ranks local businesses, which meant they could evaluate future SEO services, advice, or tools with a level of informed judgment they did not have before.

One of the clearest takeaways from this cohort is that the barrier to basic local SEO visibility in Bahawalpur is lower than most business owners assume. The competition for many local search terms is genuinely thin. A boutique owner with a complete, photo-rich Google Business Profile and five recent reviews can outrank a competitor who has been in business longer simply because that competitor has never claimed their listing. The opportunity is real and it is not evenly distributed yet.

What Most of Them Got Wrong Before Training

It would be incomplete to only describe what went right. Several common misconceptions came up repeatedly across the cohort, and they are worth naming because they are likely shared by many Bahawalpur business owners who did not attend.

The most damaging misconception was that social media following translates to Google visibility. It does not. Instagram followers, Facebook page likes, and WhatsApp contact lists do not influence how Google ranks a business in search results. Several women had invested years into building social media audiences while remaining completely invisible on Google. Both matter, but they are separate channels that require separate actions.

The second most common misconception was that SEO requires a big budget or technical expertise. For local businesses, the highest-impact SEO actions, claiming a Google Business Profile, writing a keyword-relevant description, uploading genuine photos, collecting reviews, and building a few citations on Pakistani business directories, are all free and require no technical background once you understand what to do and why.

The third was that English-language SEO does not apply to Bahawalpur. In fact, a significant portion of local search queries in Bahawalpur are typed in Roman Urdu or simple English. “Beauty salon Bahawalpur,” “cake shop near me,” and “tuition centre Bahawalpur” are all searched in English by Bahawalpur users even when Urdu is their primary language. Optimizing for these terms is both possible and effective.

What We Would Do Differently Next Time

This cohort taught us as much as it taught the participants. A few things we are changing for the next business-owner training round:

We will dedicate a full session specifically to Google reviews, how to ask for them, what to say, and how to respond to them, because this turned out to be the single highest-leverage action for businesses with no prior online presence and we underestimated how much guidance participants needed to feel confident doing it.

We will also bring in a session on basic website setup for businesses that do not have one. Several participants were ready to act but stalled because they had no website to optimize. A simple one-page site built on a free or low-cost platform is enough to begin capturing search traffic, and we want to remove that blocker in the room rather than outside it.

And we will build in a 60-day follow-up check-in rather than leaving participants to apply what they learned entirely on their own. The businesses that saw results fastest were the ones who had someone to ask when they got stuck. That accountability and access matters, and it is something we can provide more formally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a business owner with no technical background learn SEO?

Yes, and this cohort proved it. None of the 30 participants had a technical background. Several had never set up any kind of online business listing before. Within a few sessions they were performing keyword research, setting up Google Business Profiles, and understanding what their Google Search Console data was telling them. The foundational actions that move the needle for a local business are learnable without coding, web development, or any prior digital marketing knowledge.

How long does it take to see SEO results for a local Bahawalpur business?

For local SEO specifically, particularly Google Business Profile optimization and review collection, results can appear in four to eight weeks. Several businesses in this cohort appeared in Google Maps results within 60 days of completing their GBP setup. Ranking in standard organic results for competitive terms takes longer, typically three to six months of consistent effort, but local map pack visibility is often achievable much faster for businesses in markets like Bahawalpur where competition is still relatively low.

Is SEO useful for a business that sells through WhatsApp and Instagram?

Absolutely. Social media and search are separate channels that serve different customer journeys. A customer who finds you on Instagram is often a passive browser who may or may not buy. A customer who finds you through Google was actively searching for exactly what you sell. Adding search visibility alongside your existing social presence means you are capturing both types of customer rather than depending entirely on one channel. Several participants in this cohort saw their WhatsApp inquiry volume increase after improving their Google visibility.

Does She Earn offer SEO training specifically for business owners rather than students?

We have run business-owner cohorts alongside our standard student program. The core curriculum from our SEO training in Bahawalpur is the same, but the emphasis and pacing in business-owner cohorts focuses on the modules most immediately relevant to their situation, particularly local SEO, Google Business Profile, and keyword research applied to their specific products and services. Contact us on WhatsApp at 0329 2997093 to ask about current enrollment options.

What is the most important first step for a Bahawalpur business owner who wants to appear on Google?

Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. This single action is free, takes less than an hour once you understand what to fill in, and is the fastest route to appearing in Google Maps and local search results for your city. Add accurate business information, upload genuine photos of your business or products, write a description that includes the words your customers actually search for, and begin collecting reviews from people who have already bought from you. This sequence, more than any other, produced visible results fastest in our Bahawalpur business cohort.
